What causes pumkins to rot early??

Hello,

I harvested a large number of pumkins this year and observed quite a few started to break down or rot early. My farm is in northern Michigan. What causes this in some and not others? Picked too early or late? Is it variety dependent? Sensitive to bruising? What can I do to prevent this in the future? Any help you can give would be appreciated! Thanks.
