Was the summer of 2001 particularly hot and dry? Hot, with too much rain? If it's not an air born fungus or virus it may just be the weather. Rotting pumpkins is a big problem for growers south of the Mason-Dixon Line, where "Polar Fronts" never make an appearance during the summer.
