Hydroponic Pumpkins!!

I live in the Northern Territory of Australia,(the top bit!), climate is very warm, I'm attempting to grow a giant using a flood and drain system of hyproponics, wondering if there was anybody out there who has done this before??. Question, should i nip the secondary stalks off the main stalk, to allow the main stalk all of the growth??. The Royal Darwin Show ("Fair", to you guys in US.)is running a comp for the biggest pumpkin,They gave out some seeds and a few people i know are madly growing pumpkins for the show prize of AUS$500 . !!!\Love to hear from any-one about anything Horticultural, our local main crop is Mangoes!! semi-rural lifestyle.
