Ribes nigrum ( Black Currant )

Spineless, deciduous shrub. Grows to 6 feet tall and wide. Dark green, maloderous, leaves are round to ovate, 3 lobed, to 2 inches in length. White, bell-shaped flowers are held in pendent racemes, to 1 1/2 inches in length. Rounded, juicy, black fruit, to 1/4 inches across, has a blackberry flavor and can be used for jelly, jam, or sauces. There are only a few available varieties of R. nigrum because it is an alternate host to white pine blister rust.
