Description: Excellent for sowing in autumn to overwinter and produce onions quickly the next season to fill the gap before main crop varieties ripen. Very reliable, producing early, very heavy crops of large, crisp, well flavoured, flat to globe shaped onions. THE onion for autumn sowing which has consistently given high yields in trials. Can also be sown in the spring.
Sowing Instructions: For overwintering sow from early to late August in a good, fertile, free draining soil, in drills 1cm (½in) deep, 23cm (9in) apart spacing seeds about 3cm (1in) apart. If the weather is dry, water the drills before sowing and keep the beds moist until the seedlings have emerged. For spring sowing, sow outdoors once the soil is workable and thin out to 15cm (6in) apart.
Growing Instructions: Thin out seedlings the following spring to 10cm (4in) apart once they show signs of growth and give a top dressing of a nitrogenous fertiliser.
Aftercare Instructions: They are usually ready to harvest in early July and when ripe the bulbs can be lifted and stored for a period in a cool dry place. The thinnings can be used in salads. Harvest in late summer/autumn.
