Description

This very lovely Viola, hailing from the Alps of Central Europe, is normally found with mauve/purple flowers. By careful selection, T&M bring you blue flowers in delightful shades from pale, to sky and slate blue with a discrete yellow eye and black whisker-like markings. Although wonderful container/basket plants, you can use them in bedding or as a rockery plant. Flowers summer. Height 7-10cm (3-4in).

Sowing Instructions

Sowing time:late winter to early summer.

Sow in a good seed compost just covering the seed with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Germination takes 6-30 days at 15-18C (60-65F). Sealing in a polythene bag after sowing is helpful. Place in the dark until the first seedlings start to come through. Lower the temperature a little after germination and grow on in good light.

Growing Instructions

When large enough to handle, transplant the seedlings carefully to 7.5cm (3in) pots, and grow on in well ventilated conditions. Later gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out 30cm (12in) apart.

Aftercare Instructions

Prefers full sun and ordinary garden soil. Water well after planting, afterwards in dry spells.

Kitchen Notes

The petals make a colourful addition to green salads, can candied to top desserts etc. or used to make violet soup.
