Lettuce : Mini Iceberg : Sherwood
Vegetable
- Cropping: 72 Days
- Ideal for: Children
Description
Sherwood is a major breakaway in Lettuce breeding. At last there is a cos lettuce which is truly moreish. It is genuinely sweet in flavour with that all- important crisp and crunchy texture. Compared to other cos lettuce, there is less wastage as fewer leaves need to be stripped away and once cut, it will store longer in the fridge. In most cases, you won't want to store Sherwood because once you start to eat it, you'll find it hard to stop! This variety also has a very high resistance to mildew.
Sowing Instructions
| Sowing time: | spring to mid summer. |
| Sowing depth: | 6mm (¼in) deep 23cm (9in) apart. |
Sow thinly in drills. A moist well drained fertile soil which has had plenty of compost dug in the previous autumn is best. In very hot weather, water the soil before sowing and sow during the early afternoon.
An early spring sowing under cloches will provide a really early crop.
Growing Instructions
Thin out gradually to 30cm (12in) apart.
Aftercare Instructions
Cut the heads as soon as they are ready for the sweetest flavour.
