  • Cropping: Summer to autumn as salad leaves and autumn to winter as mature Kale. (125 days)

Sowing Instructions

Sowing time:April-Sept for 'salad leaf', March - May for full size Kale.
Sowing depth:1cm (½in) deep in drills 30cm (12in) apart.

For salad leaves, sow thinly. Thin seedlings when large enough to handle to 30cm (12in) apart.

For mature Kale, Sow seeds into individual pots or a seed tray of a proprietary compost and cover with 6mm (¼in) of compost or vermiculite, at a minimum of 15C ( 60F), until germination which takes around 7 days. Alternatively, can be sown thinly in a prepared seedbed 13mm (½in) deep, allowing 30cm (12in) between rows.

Growing Instructions

For mature Kale transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into larger pots, or transplant from the seedbed around 5 weeks from sowing, allowing 60cm (24in) each way.

Kitchen Notes

Can also be grown as a baby salad leaf ingredient adding texture and a peppery taste to mixed salads.
