Sweetcorn : Butterscotch F1
Vegetable
Description
A major new variety of early/mid season maturity, in that not only is it a corn of super sweetness, but it has also been modified by the 'sugar enchance' gene. This ensures a much tenderer, easy to eat, melt-in-the-mouth quality to the grain and a retained sweetness after harvest or freezer storage, significantly better than regular varieties. Height 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft).
Sowing Instructions
| Sowing time: | mid spring 4 weeks before last expected frost in your area. |
| Sowing depth: | 1cm (½in) |
Sow singly in 7.5cm (3in) pots of compost. Germination usually takes 6-10 days at 21-24C (70-75F).
Growing Instructions
Plant out 45cm (18in) apart when all danger of frost has passed, in blocks of short rows rather than one long row to ensure adequate cross pollination. A warm, sunny sheltered position in fertile, moist yet free draining soil is best.
Aftercare Instructions
Once the silks or tassels start to form on the cobs regular watering is helpful. To check that the cobs are ready to be picked pull back part of leaves covering them and squeeze one of the grains, if the liquid is thin and creamy, not watery, the cob is ready. Don't grow next to standard varieties or Butterscotch may lose some of its sweetness.
