They make excellent cut flowers or can be used to edge beds, borders etc. or fill containers with lively colour.
Flowers spring/summer.
Height 30cm (12in).
Sowing Instructions
| Sowing time: | late winter to early summer. | | Sowing depth: | 3mm (1/8in) |
Sow in a good free draining seed compost.
Make sure the compost is moist but not wet and seal in a polythene bag until after germination, which usually takes 14-21 days at 18-21C (65-70F).
Growing Instructions
Transplant when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots.
Later plant out 30cm (12in) apart into well drained soil preferably containing lime, in a sunny spot.
Aftercare Instructions
They may produce a few flower buds in late autumn/winter, these will flower early but won't be so attractive and should be removed.
Kitchen Notes
The spicy clove flavoured flowers add a zest to salads and can be candied, made into jam or sweet-sour pickle!.
