- Cropping: Harvest throughout summer into winter as required, picking only a few from each plant. Leaves can be used as spinach substitute.
Description
Beautiful, broad golden stalks are a striking and colourful addition to the vegetable garden and the flower border or containers.
The sweet stalks can be steamed as a vegetable or, when young, eaten raw in salads.
Slow to bolting, good winter hardiness.
Sowing Instructions
| Sowing time: | March to August in succession. |
| Sowing depth: | 1cm (½in) deep in drills 30cm (12in) apart. |
Sow thinly.
Growing Instructions
Thin seedlings to 23cm (9in) apart when large enough to handle, thinnings will be suitable for using in salads.
Can also be sown in broad drills and left unthinned for cut and come again salading.
Aftercare Instructions
Prefers a rich, moist, well drained soil.
Kitchen Notes
Soup can be made from the leaves, while the stems can be stripped and cooked like Asparagus.
