: When do they bud, and how do you prune them?

Hi Cindy,

With no disrespect to Waverly, butterfly bush is best pruned in late winter before they leaf out. That would be Feb to March in most areas. If they are pruned in the fall and there is a warm spell, they could put on new growth that can get damaged by frost.

You can prune them to 12" to 18" from the ground. You can also prune off the spent blooms and they will keep blooming for you.
