Hi Ana,
Ilex should be pruned in early spring. This is usually March, but you could do it now if you need to. You might want to read this site I gave the last poster.

Your holly is probably losing leaves due to extreme wet if you are in an area that is receiving a lot of rain like we are in the Mid-Atlantic area.
