: : : How should Ilex bushes be pruned? I never pruned them since I planted them three years ago. They grew very big, but this year for the first time I noticed that some of the leaves became yellow. They fall if I touch them. Should I prune them now, in May? They also have new growth. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thank you.
: How do I prune ilex bushes, or should I at all? I have six of them and I never pruned them since I planted them three years ago. They are big and dense but this year I noticed thet they started to turn yellow( not completely but some branches. They do have new growth, however. I thought it might be from too much rain. Shall I prune them and if so when? now or in the fall? I appreciate an answer. Thank you.
Ilex should be pruned in early spring. This is usually March, but you could do it now if you need to. You might want to read this site I gave the last poster.
Here's another that should be helpful.
Your holly is probably losing leaves due to extreme wet if you are in an area that is receiving a lot of rain like we are in the Mid-Atlantic area.
