: THE LAST 4 VARIGATED PRIVET HEDGES IN A LINE OF 12 ARE LOSING THEIR LEAVES ON THE SIDES AND BOTTOM OF THE PLANT. THESE WERE SMALLER THAN THE FRONT SO I DIDN'T PRUNE THEM AS MUCH AS THE OTHERS. IS THAT THE REASON FOR THE FALLING LEAVES? AND NO NEW GROWTH? OR ARE PRIVET HEDGES SUBJECT TO A CERTAIN TYPE OF DISEASE?
The last 4 may be getting the least amount of sun. Sunlight is essential to plant growth. When plants are too close together, sunlight isn't able to reach the sides and bottom of the plant because foliage from the other plants is hogging the light. I noticed yesterday that in our backyard the privets grow tallest from the east and gradually angle down to the west in the hedge. I can only account this to the sun.
