: : Yes, the holly needs a pollinator, it does not have to be china boy but any male holly.

: : : I have a newly planted China Girl Holly. Does it need a companion pollinator and, if so, must it be a China Boy Holly?

: Hi Lee,

: The reason the hollies are matched with names like China Boy or Girl is that they bloom at the same time. If you want berries it would be best to use the companion plant so that they bloom together.

Is there a rule on how close the male and female have to be planted? Can they be in separate areas of the yard?
