rose of sharon tree

To whom it may concern. I have a situation that needs emediate attention. The stalks on our rose of sharon have been slowly dying. My most recent problem is that I have stalk that is only showing parcial growth on its lower stem.
The main stalk has some cracks running up its side about a foot from the ground. Is there any thing I can do to save this section. The plant would look terrably disfigure were this third
section to be lost. Please let me know. Thanks MP
