Our HOA has insisted that we plant trees or shrubs that will grow to at least 15'. What will grow that tall with only a 5'space for roots? Hi Susan, What is your hardiness zone? If you live in Florida you would need different plant material than if you lived in Montana. Here's a zip code zone finder. http://www.gardenweb.com/zones/zip.cgi Once you give us your zone and sun conditions we can help better. If I'm understanding you, your roof will also be 5' from the fence. If so, you will need something that keeps a thin profile and doesn't have large surface roots over time. The crown of a small ornamental tree like crepe myrtle or redbud will still be about 20' around and hang over the roof. That's not a good thing. We inherited a house with trees hanging over the roof. The roof took too long to dry and cut the life of the roof in half. I'm thinking that a tree won't work for you, but shrubs like arborvite or skypencil holly would, depending on your zone and sun conditions. They are both evergreen. Check your hardiness zones. Regards,
