sweetbay magnolia

I planted a sweetbay a year ago. Receives 1/2 day sun, then bright shade. Foliage is doing beautifully...but...all the flower buds got nice and white and fat but turned brown right before bloom. Unoppenned petals then fell off. Can anyone help?????
