Hi Geene,
I don't see why you shouldn't plant one. I would suggest a search at www.google.com and put in quotes either "American hazelnut" or "Corylus americana" (the Latin name). You can also click on 'Images' at google and often get pictures as well.

You might also ask these folks if anyone grows it.
