boxwood shrubs

I need some help. I planted some small boxwood shrubs. I do not know how soon I should start trimming them.I also do not know that much about them. I am very much a novice to gardening and I am learning.
I also have lilacs on my property and they have stems about 2-3 inches in diameter. Is there a proper way to trim those down. Sincerely your Barry
