Arborvitae Leaves Turning Black

I planted a 6ft Emerald Gold Arborvitae two months ago and it has been doing pretty well all along.

Just recently I've noticed that some of the lower leaves have turned black. When I looked inside the bush, near the trunk, I noticed quite a bit of brown/dead foliage (not sure the two problems are related.) I water the shrub routinely.

Any idea what's causing the black leaves? I didn't see any insects or worms anywhere.
