You can trim the privet now through spring. If you want to keep the hedge full, trim it more on top so that the sunlight will reach the lower branches and then produce leaves.

Many times people trim privets in a "V" shape and the upper portion of the plant hordes all the sun and the lower stays bare. You could trim in an upside down "V" shape to attain the opposite effect which you'd probably prefer.
