walnut tree toxicity

: Help....I have had trouble over the years with my shade garden (sheltered by walnut trees).  Trial and error has taught me what to avoid under the walnut trees.  My hydrangeas did poorly this past year (no blooms,bloomed in the past-didn't prune, appears healthy).  I am beginning to suspect the walnut tree but am unable to find anything regarding the hydrangea's vulnerability to this?  Any clues?
