I think it's me. I lived in California and had lush photinia as a privacy hedge. Then we noticed that you could begin to see through it and within 3 months it became really thin - some stems lost all their leaves and eventually died. The local nursery said there was bacteria in the soil running along the water course and that nothing could be other than remove the shrubs and soil and sterilse.
I moved to Portland, Oregon and now have the same deal. When I first moved here the Photinia hedge seperating me from my neighbour was thick and lush and provided a great barrier. But now it's thinning. Some shrubs have died and I have taken them out. SOme have just lost leaves (mottled and manky) and look very ill and limp. What is the problem? Do I need to talk to them more and what topics would be appropiate - I'm rather boring myself. All I want is lush green shrubs that like me!
