Getting Rid of Ivy from a Walnut Tree

: I have a lovely Walnut Tree that is being over run by Ivy.  I have tried cutting the vines from ground level to a metre high and this has not worked.  Can anyone help me with the best way to get rid of the Ivy and restore the Walnut Tree to its former glory?
