Pruning Gardenias

: I bought two healthy gardenia shrubs to grow in pots on my patio in wine country, California.  They were tied to a bamboo tripod, but drooped when I untied them.  All the branches are very thin and weak.  What to do?  I never grew gardenias before and don't know if or how I should prune them to make them stronger.  They look awful now, although they are still blooming and the leaves are healthy; they just can't stand up on their own!
