Trimming Arborvitae trees

I have several Arborvitae trees located around my property that provide excellent privacy. The trees are about 17 years old and have reached a height of approximately 18 feet. Thus far the weight of the snow this winter has damaged many of the trees. The trees have grown too tall. I would like to trim about three feet off the top of each tree in the spring. However, I don’t know if it will damage them?
