If you space them, and try to shape them individually, the work will be more. Its easier to shear a flat side, than it is to shear individual round globes. But in many cases, no shearing is needed. Just let them be. Cost can be an issue. A continuous hedge is much more expensive - 2 to 3 times more plants, so 2 to 3 times more money. I like the variegated boxwood, especially in shady areas.
