About all I can add, is rake off the needles after removing the tops, but before stump removal. It makes working the soil easier.

I do that even when using a stump grinder sometimes.

If there is a big rental outfit around, some rent the grinders for as little as $125 per day.

Don't forget to sharpen your shovels and other tools. Makes it about 40% easier.
