Need to remove Vinca Myrtle

Help. We recent purchased a home which has very thick Myrtle in the front lawn. The previous owner let it spread too much and we need to remove it. It covers the entire front lawn. Any ideas on how to remove Myrtle so that it does not keep coming back would be greatly appreciated.
