removing wild onions

: I have an area in my yard approximately 18' X 18' that is covered with wild onions. Of course they grow twice as fast/tall as the grass in that area. What is the best way to get rid of the onions. Is the only was to do this by digging up the entire area and painstakingly pick out all of the onions in hopes that you have gotten them all?! Any suggestions to simplify this task would be appreciated.
