How to transplant crab apple trees?

I have 3 crab apple trees that are about 15 years old and 15 feet high planted in boxes, approx 30" cube on my terrace. Because of the trees in their present planters are much too heavy for the roof that my terrace is on, I have to transplant them into something

I have purchased rolled rim planters with a 30" top and 17" bottom diameter with a depth of 30". I have opened up a planter in which a tree is currently planted and noticed a root that is winding arount the soil that in parts has a circumference of 5". The tree will not fit into the new planter unless that root is trimmed way down,
Any suggestions.
