I live in Fairfield, CT. This past Easter weekend I hard pruned an old, 6 foot tall privet hedge. The only new growth was occuring on top, while the rest of plant was thin with very few branches. The hedges are about 40 years old. I used a gas powered chain saw and cut it down to a height of 3 feet so the only thing left are stumps 2-3 inches in diameter, with no side branches. My question is should I have cut the plant completely down to ground level so that only new shoots grow up versus the new growth that will eventually come back on the 3 existing foot stalks? thanks.
