Peach tree cuttings

I inherited a peach tree when we bought our new house and I know precious little about them. It had been cut down but managed to produce a peach last year (albeit somewhat green and about an inch in diameter). My wife has since slaughtered the trunk and cut it down to about 6 inches high (1.5 in diameter) so she could install a washing line. It has now sprouted out from the base of the trunk, so I would like some advice on whether I can take a cutting from what is left so I can transplant it to a safer area of the garden.
Where should I cut? What do I do with the cutting, and where is the best place to put it?
