locust sapplings

Good evening,
We have a cabin in the mountains of NC. There appears to be number of locust sapplings in the field behind our house. My question is can one transplant them and if so what is the best time of year???
My husband thinks they would make a good fence row???
Also what kind of locust do you think they are ???
