That's usually the older foliage on the inside shedding as the diameter of the branch enlarges. That's why many conifers like Pines, have what's referred to as "needle persistance." Some trees hold needles up to 2 years old. Another can hold needles up to 10 years (then the next year, it drops the 10th year old needles as the new year's growth replaces it.) |
