Magnolia tree - yellow leaves

I planted a magnolia tree (not sure what varity) last Sept. this spring (April) some of the leaves started to turn yellow and fall off. This has continued and is still doing it. I have furtilized it and added iron to the soil around it. I am afraid that I will lose the tree and don't know what to do next.
