We have a large cherry tree in our yard that has bore huge amounts of cherries each year in mid June until this year. I don't know the type of tree except the fruit is very sweet and tasty. This year the tree had only about 10-12 cherries that we could see and the leaves appear wilted and are turning yellow and curling. We had a wet spring and because grass does not grow well under the tree now we covered a large area with pea gravel around the base of the tree to cut down on the mud. Some of the root system was becoming exposed and the stone has covered everything. We love our tree but are worried that we did something to it by putting the pea gravel down. There does not appear to be anything on the leaves but there are some marks on the tree trunk. Any suggestions are appreciated as we are horticulturally challenged! We live on the shores of Lake Ontario on a hill so drainage runs down to the end of the yard and the tree is mid way down the yard.
