Plants around tree are dying

: Since I moved into my new house last year, i've tried to plant different annuals around the tree. No matter what I plant or how often I water, everything is dying. I'm assuming the tree is soaking up all the nutrients. I don't know exactly what kind of tree it is, but I know it's not a maple. Other people in my neighborhood with the same type of tree have plants, why can't I?
