Cherry Tree 'bleeding out'

My cherry tree, exact age unknown but at least 10 years, has suddenly started bleeding out on one side. Sap is dripping from branches and running down the trunk. Not necessarily from wounds although old prune wounds are also 'bleeding.'
Any ideas?
