Norway Maple rotting

Greetings: I have a large Norway Maple on my property situated about 15 feet from my house. I am concerned with the extensive loss of bark in the crotch of the tree. I am concerned that this may cause the tree to start to rot and turn into a dangerous situation, especially considering it looms over my roof. I am stongly considering having it taken down, but really want confirmation of my concerns before I finally make the decision. I'm fond of the tree and the shade it provides my home. Would someone with tree knowledge care to give me advice on whether I need to take this tree down? Thank you very much. Kevin
