This is the correct link to pictures: http://community.webshots.com/user/tbwtb62-date : Greetings: I have a large Norway Maple on my property situated about 15 feet from my house. I am concerned with the extensive loss of bark in the crotch of the tree. I am concerned that this may cause the tree to start to rot and turn into a dangerous situation, especially considering it looms over my roof. I am stongly considering having it taken down, but really want confirmation of my concerns before I finally make the decision. I'm fond of the tree and the shade it provides my home. I have a link to some pictures I took of it at: : http://community.webshots.com/user/tbwtb62-date : Would someone with tree knowledge care to give me advice on whether I need to take this tree down? Thank you very much. Kevin I wouldn't cut it down. I'd use a pruning seal and just cover it up. However, you may want to call a certified arborist and get their opinion because they have seen this kind of problem. But I have to say that I have a pear tree that's looked like this for about 12 years and it's doing fine.
