![]() This is gummosis which is found on many trees. If it's coming out of cankers, read on, otherwise skip to next paragraph. It's caused by bacteria (Pseudomonas syringae). During the fall, winter, and early spring, large quantities of bactiera-containing gum ooze from the cankers. Bacterial activity decreases in the summer. With the onset of cool, wet fall weather, bacterial activity increases. This disease is most serious on young trees. Control: In the fall, spray with a fungicide containing basic copper sulfate. Many fruit trees have a natural tendency to ooze sap. As long as the bark appears healthy you do not need to worry.
