tree roots

: Ok. I don't know where to go with this question, so I'll start here.  I have a couple of trees in my front yard.  One is a crabapple tree.  And at the bottom of the trunk, near the ground, out of the tree itself is growing these wierd "weeds", I guess.  I also notice that they are growing out of the roots of the trees in my lawn.  They are thick stemmed, so I need a big cutting shear or pruner to get rid of them but they keep growing back.  Does anyone have any idea what these are and what I can do to keep them from growing?  I don't want to kill the tree and I'm not sure if they are actually weeds.  Thanks for any help or suggestions!!
