: Ok. I don't know where to go with this question, so I'll start here. I have a couple of trees in my front yard. One is a crabapple tree. And at the bottom of the trunk, near the ground, out of the tree itself is growing these wierd "weeds", I guess. I also notice that they are growing out of the roots of the trees in my lawn. They are thick stemmed, so I need a big cutting shear or pruner to get rid of them but they keep growing back. Does anyone have any idea what these are and what I can do to keep them from growing? I don't want to kill the tree and I'm not sure if they are actually weeds. Thanks for any help or suggestions!!

Hi Cheryl,
Those aren't weeds, but suckers that the tree sends up. You will need to prune them off. Best done as soon as you notice them. Here's some sites on pruning the rest of the tree that should be helpful.
