We are installing new landscaping and are having trouble identifying the best tropical tree to put in our atrium, so I'd like your ideas! Our atrium has an open roof but high walls on all sides - so it's protected from the wind but plants will only receive direct sunlight for about 5-6 hours a day (the higher the tree, the more light it'll get). I'd like an open, airy tropical to go in there - banana would be great, but I don't know it it would get enough sunlight. I've also considered some of the part-shade tolerant palms, like the butia capitata. The other caveat is that the tree needs to be no more than about 15 ft.(MAYBE up to 20ft.) high at maturity. Please help me with your ideas. I live in Southern California, in a Zone 9 area. The Western zone region is 21. Thanks!
