Care and Pruning Hibiscus Trees

We live in the Great Lakes areas that experinence severe cold. We were given a Hibiscus tree two years ago for an aniversary gift and need some care tips about feeding and pruning. We take it out in the spring and it does well. When we bring it in for the winter it drops all of it's leaves.
Any tips on pruning and feeding?
