I have also been considering planting on in southern California. I've seen many here in bloom.
Although I've never had one, I had a a flowering tree when I was in Hawaii, I believe it was a poincerra tree. It was a stalk at first but I topped the tree at a height where I wanted it to branch out. For me that was about 6 foot. I left there but was back to visit about 5 years later and saw that it had branched at that height quite well. And made it easier to trim later. The branches would grow so quickley that they might break off easily in a good wind so an annual or biannual pruning is in order.
