Hi Trish,

You say that you and your mother "were out" so I'm thinking that you live somewhere tropical and this isn't a houseplant. If you didn't see a bloom I suspect that you may have missed it. Here's the only picture I could find of a blossom ready to open.

I suspect that what you are seeing is a seed pod. I think the seeds are toxic if ingested. They also don't store well and need to be planted immediately if you want to grow plants from the seeds.
