Hi Dolly,

we have similar problems in Hilo, and I think the problem is green coffee scale. There also is a white scale on some gardenias in this area. I have only seen the black bugs recently but we have had sooty mold for a long time. I usually just let the rain wash it off and don't bother with it. As for spraying I have only tried a mixture of a mild dish detergent and water. It helps some, but I have never managed to get rid of it completely - scales are notorious for that.
